baroness
Set in a world inspired by our own, In a country called Anglia in the 18th century.
This is the story of how I became a monster.
Before I was a monster I was a baroness, and before I was a baroness, I was a common, God-fearing peasant girl. I was obedient and I cared about decency and being a good person. I worked hard to keep our humble house and I helped my father in his woodshop. But life sometimes takes you down dark twisting roads and forces you to change in ways you do not expect.
Today I have a different name for every city that I go to, but I was born Ophelia, daughter of the carpenter of Oakvalle, and later I would become Lady Ophelia Barrington, Baroness of Greystead. It was unheard of for a commoner to marry a noble and more unheard of still to become the monster that I am today.
Sometimes I think it was all the baron's fault, for if he had not entered my life it would have been completely different than it turned out to be. Had I stayed a commoner, I might have married a hard working farmer or smith, perhaps, and we would have led a quiet, uneventful life. I knew how to care for a man: I cared for Pa after Ma passed. I knew how to cook and wash, how to split logs for the fire, how to barter in the market for fair prices. I could mend torn clothing and I could make a salve for minor wounds. I liked children well enough, and although I had no siblings to take care of, I had helped watch our neighbor's children when his wife fell ill. None of these things were required of me, though, when I became the baroness.
